Selective Browsing Problem
I experienced an aberration with my DSL after last year's typhoon Milenio. I have a PLDT myDSL account and there were days when I can't access websites such as google.com, friendster.com, youtube.com, etc., and pinging those websites didn't help either. I can't connect via FTP to my web server. I even had problems sending and receiving e-mail.
I re-configured my e-mail client to use the ip address of my mail server and I was able to restore my e-mail service. I did the same with FTP and I was finally able to connect and upload files to my server.
This made me think that the problem was probably with PLDT DNS servers. I used an anonymizer/proxy server to try and browse the websites mentioned above. When the websites loaded thru the proxy server, I was convinced that the problem was indeed with the DNS servers.
After searching thru Google for a solution, I found out that this anomaly had a name: Selective Browsing Problem.
The solution was to change the DNS servers dynamically assigned by my ISP whenever I connect to user defined DNS servers. I have compiled a list of PLDT DNS servers. Choose two servers from the list and change your DNS servers under TCP/IP properties. You can also use public domain DNS servers or OpenDNS.
A friend of mine was running Windows and Linux on the same machine (dual boot). He was experiencing the same problem when browsing under Windows, but not under Linux. I read about a solution somewhere (I can't remember where) that involved disabling the DNS Client Service in Windows. I suggested this to my friend and it seemed to fix his browsing problem.
